County Awaits Word On Cleanup Near Kennel Site

Suffolk County is biding its time as both the New York State Department 
of Environmental Conservation and the NYS Department of Health are 
accepting public comments on the county's proposed brownfield 
remediation program for a half-acre site adjacent to a former canine 
kennel located at Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach.

The cost to clean up the 0.5-acre site is estimated to be approximately 
$2 million, said Carrie Meek Gallagher, the county's environment and 
energy commissioner. Using the estimated figures, if the money were to 
come from the county's general fund, and the life of the bond were 20 
years, the tax impact would be 27 cents annually, throughout the life of 
the bond, to each county taxpayer, according to Gail Vizzini, director 
of the Legislature's Budget Review Office.
