Corps of Engineers schedules public meeting on bombing range site studies Carlsbad Current-Argus (NM) February 4, 2008 CARLSBAD - Between 1943 and 1945, U.S. military bombers flew over Eddy County, dropping bombs over designated precision practice bombing ranges The bombs, some live ones and some black powder-filled concrete bombs, were dropped on sites just outside the perimeters of the Army Air Force Base, known today as the Carlsbad Municipal Airport. The air base was established to train bombardiers and navigators in precision bombing. The men later flew missions over Europe during World War II. ...
