Army shells Eagle River Flats as prelude to year-round operation CONCERNS: Environmentalists say this could put wildlife at risk. By JAMES HALPIN Anchorage Daily News (AK) February 13, 2008 The Eagle River Flats are being blasted this week as the U.S. Army Alaska, hoping to reopen the area to year-round shelling, prepares to continue testing the extent to which it has been cleaned up since chemicals killed thousands of water fowl there in the 1980s and '90s. The effort is part of a plan to open the flats to summertime training, which has been banned by the Army since 1992 after it became clear that white phosphorus in its munitions was the cause of mass waterfowl deaths in the 2,200-acre flats. But environmentalists say plans to reopen the flats to year-round shelling will put more wildlife at risk -- in particular Cook Inlet beluga whales. ...
