Corps of Engineers Seeks Information on Buried Munitions at Bartow Airport By S. L. FRISBIE Polk County Democrat (FL) February 13, 2008 An inspection team that visited Bartow Municipal Airport last year found no additional buried munitions of the type found in December 2000, but the Army Corps of Engineers would like to hear from anyone who has knowledge of any more. A consultant's report acknowledged that there may be more explosives in a 20.19-acre burial pit on the airport. The airport, built as Bartow Army Air Field and later renamed Bartow Air Base, was a World War II pilot training facility, put into service in 1943. It was closed in 1945, and was reopened from 1950 to 1960 as a pilot training school operated by civilian contractors. ...
