Fire Leaves Only 35 Buildings By Mary L. Crider FORT SMITH TIMES RECORD (AR) February 21, 2008 Of the 190 buildings in the Chaffee Crossing fire area, 155 are gone, said Ivy Owen, Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority director. “So there are 35 left standing or hanging or whatever you want to call it,” Owen told the Sebastian County Quorum Court on Tuesday. The Jan. 29 Chaffee Crossing fire covered more than 100 acres. Owen said the Redevelopment Authority is working with the county judge, the county Department of Emergency Management, the state and the city of Fort Smith to coordinate a cleanup effort at the site. Owen told the justices of the peace he’s tired of hearing the fire being called “a blessing in disguise.” The World War II-era barracks buildings were slated for eventual demolition, but of demolition options, he said he’d rather use a pay as you tear down the buildings option than be hit with a $4.6 million fire debris cleanup bill. ...
