By Susie Pakoua Vang The Fresno Bee March 9, 2008 LEMOORE -- In 1954, the Navy searched Central California for a place where its loud jets could soar without complaints from neighbors. The Navy found that spot on farmland west of Lemoore, then a small Kings County town. Naval Air Station Lemoore was built in 1961 seven miles west of downtown and today is home to the West Coast fleet of fighter jets with squadrons serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. ... A long-ago decision to OK a community college campus west of Highway 41 is now helping shape the proposal, which calls for the 21,000-resident city to grow toward the air station. The Navy opposes that because some homes would be built directly under an established flight path. The city's environmental impact report projects that about 23% of the 7,000 new residents would be exposed to noise levels expected to cause them to be "highly annoyed." ...
