Arsenal project exalted for veterans' cemetery, tallgrass prairie

JOLIET - Three area residents were recognized Wednesday for their part 
in the 10-year environmental cleanup of the former Joliet Army 
Ammunition Plant.

The arsenal was permanently closed in 1976 and declared excess property 
in 1993. The 23,500-acre site is now home to the nation's first 
tallgrass prairie, second largest national cemetery, third largest part 
and intermodal facility, a landfill, and a skilled employees training 
facility.
