RIALTO - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is taking steps to
prod five parties to further investigate the extent of water
contamination here.

The five parties - which the EPA has identified for the first time as
potential polluters - are the Charlotte, N.C.-based Goodrich Corp.,
local fireworks company Pyro Spectaculars, the defunct Black & Decker
division of Emhart Industries and two property owners, Ken Thompson Inc.
and Chung Ming Wong.

"We're looking for them to do additional testing and investigation work
- the bulk of which will be to install and sample another half-dozen
monitoring wells," said Wayne Praskins, project manager for the EPA in
San Francisco.

Rialto's groundwater is contaminated with an ingredient in explosives -
perchlorate - and industrial cleaning solvents. Although officials say
no contaminated water is being served to residents, Rialto, Colton and
even the state of California have so far been unable to hold any of the
suspected polluters responsible.
