State official wants to add Rialto perchlorate site to federal Superfund

By JENNIFER BOWLES Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) May 5, 2008California's top environmental official supports designating as a federal Superfund site a 160-acre industrial plot in Rialto believed to be the source of the Inland region's largest unabated plume of perchlorate pollution. A designation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would make the site eligible for clean-up funds. Several defense contractors and fireworks companies that used the land dating back more than 60 years are believed to have dumped perchlorate, an ingredient of rocket fuel, on the ground. ...Linda Adams, California's environmental protection secretary, wrote in a May 2 letter to the U.S. EPA that her one caveat in making it a Superfund site is whether negotiations with three companies that allegedly caused some of the pollution yield a comprehensive clean up. If successful, there would be no need for the Superfund designation. ...
