Cleanup Will Involve Vaporizing Toxic Waste

Starting this fall, the Department of Energy's next big project is to 
remove the largest source of contaminated groundwater from the Paducah 
Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

Workers will install the system, which will start operating in late 
winter to early spring. It will remove thousands of gallons of the 
degreaser trichloroethylene (TCE), leaked from an equipment-cleaning 
building in the middle of the plant.

Reinhard Knerr, Department of Energy site director for the plant, spoke 
at the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce breakfast Thursday morning. 
Besides updating cleanup activities, he named Paducah's Swift & Staley, 
a major roads and grounds contractor with DOE, as the department's Small 
Business of the Year.
