Fort Baker rejoins life as a public showplace Carl Nolte San Francisco Chronicle June 13, 2008The National Park Service and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will raise the flag Saturday on the parade ground of Fort Baker, an old U.S. Army post in Marin County that has been transformed into a public showplace. The fort, which looks like something out of a postcard - white buildings arranged in the shape of a horseshoe around a grass parade ground - has been almost invisible to Bay Area residents. Visiting was not encouraged in its Army days, and there was not much to see until recently. Now it includes a 142-room lodge, a restaurant, a bar and carefully restored turn-of-the-century buildings. "An elegant place in a park setting," Brian O'Neill calls it. He is the general superintendent of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and sort of the godfather of the whole project. ...
