Year of requests, negotiations By Justin M. Palk Frederick News Post (MD) June 21, 2008Maryland environmental officials have been trying for a year to get Fort Detrick's Area B on the federal government's Superfund National Priority List. In that time, negotiations between post and state officials over a framework for cleaning polluted groundwater stalled, and the Environmental Protection Agency missed a chance to list the site, said Horacio Tablada, director of the Maryland Department of the Environment's Waste Management Administration. The NPL includes the most seriously contaminated sites identified for possible long-term cleanup, according to the EPA. Roxanne Smith, a spokeswoman for the EPA, said she could only reiterate the agency's statement from Tuesday that it was reviewing the state's request to put Area B on the NPL. ...
