INGLESIDE -- Planning the redevelopment of 155 surplus acres at Naval Station Ingleside is going to require an additional $600,000, members of the Ingleside Local Redevelopment Authority said Friday.

The group voted to amend its 2009 budget, which runs December through November 2009, during its regular meeting at Ingleside City Hall.

The $600,000 would allow the group to purchase a geographic information system and conduct a feasibility study to determine if a new highway is needed to connect State Highway 361 to the surplus acres now known as the Electromagnetic Roll Facility. A geographic information system is an integrated and interactive mapping database that would compile information on the ground's surface and below-ground infrastructure.

"Such a system is helpful when it comes to economic development because it could be tied with similar systems of neighboring cities and counties to get a good idea of what's available and what's needed," said group member Sandi Ridgley, also Ingleside Chamber of Commerce's executive director.
