Group still advancing BNAS garden proposal Caitlin Elsaesser Brunswick Times Record (ME) July 1, 2008BRUNSWICK - Herschel Sternlieb has been dreaming about gardens for years. When he first approached the Brunswick Town Council and said he would like to transform a portion of the Brunswick Naval Station into a botanical garden, they told him to forget about it. Today, his plan seems more plausible. Sternlieb hopes to create a garden project on a large parcel of the Brunswick naval base. The site would encompass multiple gardens, including individual plots; a greenhouse, an events pavilion and multi-use trails. Since the base closure was announced two years ago, a group of volunteers has met monthly about the gardens. They have collected thousands of signatures from Brunswick area residents supporting the proposal. They won an $8,700 grant from the Threshold Foundation, which has allowed them to produce snappy bumper stickers and brochures for their new brand name — Brunswick Park and Gardens. ...
