Army Eyeing New Training Site In Middletown By JOSH KOVNER Hartford Courant (CT) July 2, 2008 MIDDLETOWN —Repelled at Freeman Road, the Army has moved across town and chosen a Westfield site for a huge regional training base — and now a new set of neighbors is expressing equally fervent, though different, concerns. Westfield residents who live near the proposed site — an 88-acre property at Middle Street and Boardman Lane that is zoned for industry — told the Army Corps of Engineers at a recent meeting they are concerned about heavy traffic and convinced the city will miss out on any economic benefit from the base. The neighbors feel the 150 full-time workers and the 800 citizen soldiers who would train at the Army Reserve and Connecticut National Guard facility on weekends would likely eat, shop, or stay over in neighboring Cromwell or Berlin, rather than in downtown Middletown, depriving the city of any of the perks from the 273,000-square-foot complex. ...
