Subject: [CPEO-MEF] CONTRACTORS: Development near Rocketdyne (CA)

From: Michael Collins <mlcreporter@verizon.net>

EnviroReporter.com <http://enviroreporter.com/index.html> has discovered that a proposed development site at Runkle Canyon, in Simi Valley California, is even more impacted by contamination than previously known. This revelation came after careful analysis of thousands of pages of documents provided by the developer, KB Home, to California EPA's Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and through documented data, reports, and analysis by EnviroReporter.com from its three-year investigation of the site. DTSC was given the results of our new revelations July 6, 2008 as part of the document analysis stage of their "voluntary cleanup agreement" with KB Home.

As we have previously reported (in tandem with the Ventura County Reporter and Los Angeles CityBeat), the 1,600-acre site's soil, surface water and groundwater have been impacted by high levels of radioactive strontium-90, the toxic chemicals perchlorate and trichloroethylene, and heavy metals including chromium, arsenic, and vanadium. EnviroReporter.com has now learned that:

* Toxic rocket fuel component NDMA has been found in the groundwater;

* Cancerous benzene is oozing out of a tarry muck on the property at chronic levels which the developer's lab says should be excavated and removed;

* Rocket fuel oxidizer perchlorate has been found in the groundwater at levels five times higher than previously known and 55 times Cal-EPA's Public Health Goal;

* Heavy metal vanadium detected in water at level four times higher than previously known and threatens Simi Valley's groundwater supply;

* Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbon benzo(a)antracene is 39.19 times the EPA's Preliminary Remediation Goal for the contaminant.

EnviroReporter.com has just created three interactive timelines that explain, in documented detail, these new developments as well as the history of Runkle Canyon and the controversy surrounding it:
