Proposed shipyard gets permit
Mare Island project receives OK from water board

A shipbuilding and repair company was granted permission Wednesday to flush Mare Island Strait water in and out of ship dry docks.

Now, Allied Defense Recycling needs a lease for the dry docks so the discharge permit is usable.

An Allied Defense Recycling spokesman said that obtaining this time- and cost-consuming permit associated with reopening a shipyard on Mare Island was a major step. The San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board unanimously approved the permit after nearly an hour and a half of discussion, said Gary Whitney, director of marine operations for the ship company.

"There were a number of very pertinent questions that the board asked that needed to be answered," Whitney said. "They primarily had a lot to do with procedure."
