Proposed shipyard gets permit Mare Island project receives OK from water board By JESSICA A. YORK Vallejo Times-Herald (CA) July 10, 2008A shipbuilding and repair company was granted permission Wednesday to flush Mare Island Strait water in and out of ship dry docks. Now, Allied Defense Recycling needs a lease for the dry docks so the discharge permit is usable. An Allied Defense Recycling spokesman said that obtaining this time- and cost-consuming permit associated with reopening a shipyard on Mare Island was a major step. The San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board unanimously approved the permit after nearly an hour and a half of discussion, said Gary Whitney, director of marine operations for the ship company. "There were a number of very pertinent questions that the board asked that needed to be answered," Whitney said. "They primarily had a lot to do with procedure." ...
