Military plans for base cleanup Input is welcome at public hearing By David Wren Myrtle Beach Sun News (SC) July 22, 2008Military and environmental officials will hold a public hearing tonight at the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base to discuss cleanup plans for two base sites where groundwater contamination exists. The first site, called the Old Entomology Shop, is located near the northern boundary of the base adjacent to Emory Road. The now-demolished shop was used to mix and store pesticides from 1971 through 1986. Groundwater tests at the site have shown high levels of cancer-causing trichloroethylene, vinyl chloride and pesticides. The military plans to extract some of the contaminated groundwater from the site while letting the rest of contamination break down over time. ...
