Luke's Aux. 1 encroachment dispute ratchets up a notch between AG and 
supervisors

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors continues to issue building permits 
at Aux. 1 Field, a critical training facility for Luke Air Force Base 
pilots. The field is used to practice instrument landings and pilots fly 
extremely low to the airstrip, but never actually land. The field, 25 to 
30 miles northwest of Luke between Surprise and Wickenburg, is slowly 
being surrounded by residential development that threatens the mission 
of Luke.

Two years ago, the state Legislature enacted a law, ARS 28-8481, which 
requires all counties in Arizona to amend their comprehensive plans to 
assure that any future developments within their jurisdictions are 
compatible with high noise and accident potential zones around military 
installations.

Luke supporters say they will do all in their power to ensure Luke's 
mission and stop what they consider incompatible development taking 
place around Aux. 1 Field.
