Air Force preparing to demolish historic building

A World War II-era building where Air Force researchers helped design 
and develop the first anti-gravity suits for pilots and early NASA 
spacesuits is facing the wrecking ball.

The Air Force is moving to demolish Building 55 at Wright-Patterson Air 
Force Base because it cannot find a mission for the structure, doesn't 
have the money to maintain it and needs to tear it down to remove 
contaminated soil underneath.

It's the latest chapter in what have become periodic duels between 
preservationists and those seeking to demolish buildings around Dayton 
that made military history.

The Ohio Historic Preservation Office and the Air Force agree that the 
building is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic 
Places.
