Md. warns Army of lawsuit State presses for deadline on Fort Meade pollution cleanup By Timothy B. Wheeler Baltimore Sun August 20, 2008Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler notified the Army Tuesday that the state plans to sue to get it to finish cleaning up groundwater and soil contamination at Fort Meade. Ratcheting up a long-running dispute, Gansler sent the Army a notice of the state's intent to sue under federal pollution law, accusing the military of failing to comply with a year-old cleanup order from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Army has been working for years, under supervision by the EPA and the state, to find and clean up pollution at the 5,400-acre base in Anne Arundel County stemming from past careless disposal of fuel and munitions. ... For more than a decade, Environmental Protection Agency officials have detected contaminants, some known to cause cancer and other health problems, at Fort Meade and other military sites. Army, EPA and Maryland officials have been working for years to clean up the pollution. Last year, the EPA issued an order saying that the dumped chemicals at Fort Meade might pose "imminent and substantial dangers to public health." The order came with deadlines to expedite the cleanup and gave the EPA leverage to force compliance. The Defense Department, however, resisted the order. And under executive branch policy, the EPA will not sue the military as it would a private polluter. ...
