Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] REGULATION: Ft. Detrick and Rialto site proposed for "Superfund" |
U.S. EPA has proposed adding two more military sites to the "Superfund"
Nation Priorities List:
Ft. Detrick's largely undeveloped Area B TCE/PCE groundwater contamination, Frederick, Maryland. This is not the part of the base where "biological defense" research, such as work with anthrax, is being conducted. See http://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/npl/nar1782.htm The former Rialto Ammunition Support Point, Rialto, California. This is listed as the B.F. Goodrich site because the Army shut down its facility immediately after World War II, before the principal groundwater contaminant, perchlorate, was in widespread military use. The storage "igloos" from Army days attracted businesses using or making pyrotechnics, explosives, and propellants. See http://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/npl/nar1790.htm.
