Memo to military gateway communities, state officials: 'You snooze, you
lose!'

(TX) September 11, 2008Each military installation and its gateway community's interests are at once unique and complicated, but the bottom line for all is that if military presence at any base is to be preserved, local and state officials must help guard against encroachment that threatens the mission. That was the overarching message presented by nearly all who testified to the state Senate Veteran Affairs & Military Installations Committee at the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium, Monday (Sept. 8). An audience of about 100 heard 15 military leaders, county commissioners, congressional representatives, and city council members advise Committee Chair Sen. Leticia Van de Putte (D-District 26, San Antonio) and the members about real threats, probable consequences, and safeguard measures to be considered. ...
