City Council OKs Fort Lawton redevelopment plan

Proposal calls for mix of market rate, homeless housing

Seattle City Council members agreed unanimously Monday to send a plan to the federal government for redeveloping the Fort Lawton Army Reserve Center with 216 homes -- a mix of market rate and homeless housing.

The federal government declared the land surplus in 2005 as part of its base closure and realignment program. The city wants to acquire the land located in the Magnolia neighborhood, next to Discovery Park.

The approved proposal now goes to the Defense and Housing and Urban Development departments for consideration. The Seattle Housing Authority would be the lead developer.

Mayor Greg Nickels called the proposal "a unique opportunity to provide much-needed homeless housing for families and seniors in a mixed-income community." But some Magnolia neighbors remain unhappy with the plan.
