Duluth and Red Cliff talk over DoD barrel investigation Story posted Tuesday at 3:42 p.m. Mike Simonson 91.3 KUWS FM (Duluth, MN) September 30, 2008Duluth and the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa are hoping to partner to investigate Department of Defense barrels dumped into Lake Superior. Mike Simonson reports. Sonar surveys are going on this year to try to locate all of the dump sites north of Duluth's harbor. Since more than 1400 of these 60-gallon drums were dumped between 1958 and 1962, only four of seven sites have been located and nine barrels raised. The barrels contain ammunition parts. Now, Red Cliff is using Defense Department money, $600,000, to try to find all of these sites and then determine if they are a risk to Lake Superior's water supply. ...
