Remaining Tungsten Bullets Auctioned Off Environmental Update U.S. Army Environmental center Fall 2008Bidding closed Sept. 12 for more than 190,000 pounds of tungsten, tungsten-nylon core and completed projectiles remaining from the Army's lead-free bullet program. The Army developed a tungsten-nylon mix for its M16 ammunition cores as an alternative to lead, but discontinued its use in 2006.
