Company scours fort for munitions
A Maryland firm has received a $1.598M contract to investigate the 
grounds of Fort Monroe.

FORT MONROE

— A Maryland company will spend the next 15 months investigating the 
amount of old cannon balls, bullets and other munitions buried in the 
dirt at 13 different sites on Fort Monroe.

EA Engineering Science and Technology of Hunt Valley, Md., received a 
contract in September for $1,598,908 to investigate the site, determine 
the extent of munitions and explosives that could be a concern to the 
future reuse of the Army post.

The company's work schedule was explained Thursday night during a 
meeting of the Fort Monroe Restoration Advisory Board.

The Army is planning to leave the 570-acre historic military 
installation by September 2011 and the Department of Defense will 
transfer the land to the commonwealth of Virginia for some other use. 
What that future use may be will be decided by an 18-member board of 
citizens, elected officials and politicians.
