Air Force eyes savings on cleanup By George Brennan Cape Cod Times (MA) November 28, 2008 6:00 AMCAMP EDWARDS - Air Force officials believe they can effectively clean groundwater contaminated by solvents and fuel spills and save taxpayers $200 million in the process. At a meeting last week, Rose Forbes, project manager for the Air Force Center for Engineering & Environment, spelled out efficiencies from changing light bulbs to building wind turbines that may save millions off the bottom line of the massive cleanup. In 2002, Air Force officials estimated it would cost $501 million to complete the groundwater clean up, which includes extracting water from 12 plumes, running it through water treatment plants and injecting it back into the ground. To date the Air Force has spent $626 million on the cleanup, which includes cleaning water that has migrated off base into the Hatchville section of Falmouth. Officials now estimate it will cost $159 million to finish the job in 2050, a projection that's $195 million less the original projected cost of $989 million. ...
