Council orders police firing range closed By Richard Gaines Gloucester Daily Times (MA) December 03, 2008 10:48 pmThe heavily used Police Department firing range, whose 16 year history at the edge of a West Gloucester reservoir is unregulated and almost entirely undocumented, has been ordered shut down by City Council. ..."It just started," said Frontiero. "The effect on the watershed is basically unknown. Lead contamination is a huge issue," he added. Max Schenk, a health department sanitarian, said he and conservation agent Nancy Ryder have inspected the site and found that the runoff from the area of the range does not feed back into the reservoir. Schenk also said the Coast Guard had contracted to have the spent lead removed every two years. The department has agreed to write a management plan for the range, he added. ...
