K-25 demolition begins By John Huotari The Oak Ridger (TN) December 16, 2008 OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -It was once the world's largest building under one roof and played a historic part in World War II and the Cold War. Now, in a few years, most or all of the building will be gone.On Tuesday afternoon, work crews began demolishing the crumbling K-25 Building in west Oak Ridge, ripping and smashing into its west wing and removing steel and debris with yellow and black excavators outfitted with rotating shears. Many older facilities at the site, like K-25, must come down because they "are not fit for reuse and pose potential long-term environmental and safety problems," according to the U.S. Department of Energy. K-25, for example, has been "idle" for 23 years with little or no maintenance, and has caved-in roofs, unsafe floors and cracked columns, said executives from Bechtel Jacobs Co., DOE's prime cleanup contractor in Oak Ridge. ...
