Base spill totals 200,000 gallons By Schuyler Kropf Charleston Post and Courier (SC) February 24, 2010The working estimate of Sunday's raw sewage leak at Charleston Air Force Base, which also threatened the Ashley River, is about 200,000 gallons, an official said Tuesday. The state health warning on recreational activities along a 10-mile stretch of the river in North Charleston will stay in effect indefinitely, while water quality testing continues. Officials report the leak has been fixed and that the recovery process included using 24,000 gallons of disinfectant to clean wherever the sewage path went, including through a storm drain toward the river. Not all of the leaked materials, which broke loose from a decaying North Charleston Sewer District line at the base, made it to the waterway. ...
