Air Force cleanup targets private water wells By George Brennan Cape Cod Times February 26, 2010FALMOUTH - The Air Force is reaching out to North Falmouth and Cataumet neighborhoods to determine whether any private wells are being used for drinking water or irrigation that have yet to be identified, a spokesman said yesterday. Over the past two years, the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment, which is overseeing part of the massive cleanup of groundwater at the Massachusetts Military Reservation, has sent mailings and made phone calls to nearly 500 property owners. About 20 percent of the property owners have yet to respond, which is the focus of the upcoming outreach effort, said Doug Karson, community involvement leader for the Air Force. The underground contamination plumes, which are in areas identified by the Air Force as Landfill One and Chemical Spill 23, are contaminated with solvents up to seven times higher than allowed under drinking water standards. ...
