Michael Baker Corp. responds to water contamination report By: Michael Pound Beaver County Times (PA) March 1, 2010MOON TWP. - An incorrect historical summary led to a dramatic understatement of the levels of toxins in the water supply at a U.S. Marine Corps base in North Carolina when officials from the environmental arm of Michael Baker Corp. released reports about the contamination in the early 1990s, the company has said. In February, the Associated Press conducted an analysis of the contamination of the water system at Camp Lejeune and the steps the U.S. Department of Defense took to address the longstanding problem. Among the AP’s findings was that Baker Environmental issued at least one report that said the level of benzene, a known carcinogen, in the water was 38 parts per billion instead of 380 parts per billion; in another report, the AP said, Baker officials omitted references to benzene in the post’s water. The Defense Department hired Baker Environmental in 1991 to prepare a remediation plan for contaminated wells at Camp Lejeune, several years after the contamination was discovered and six years after one well, Well 602 near Hadnot Point, was permanently shut down by the Marine Corps because it was contaminated by benzene and other toxins. ...
