Plans To Increase Naval Training Draw Scrutiny In Coronado And I.B. by David Axelson Coronado Eagle & Journal (CA) March 11, 2010According to the draft of an Environmental Impact Statement filed by the Department of the Navy dated January 2010, increased training activity necessary for Naval and Marine Corps forces will require expanded operations in the Silver Strand area. The Silver Strand Training Center includes 7,000 yards of ocean beach and is divided into two sections. SSTC-North runs from south of Loews Coronado Bay Resort to the northern boundary of Silver Strand State Beach. SSTC-South runs from south of the beach to an area just north of YMCA Camp Surf, a geographic area which straddles both Coronado and Imperial Beach. Quoting the EIS, the Silver Strand Training Center has been used by the Navy for over 60 years and "Plays a vital part in the execution of the operational readiness mandate. The SSTC has historically been and continues to be, a critical range for west coast naval amphibious, special warfare, and mine countermeasure activities." ...
