SRS facility's contamination incidents led to 3-week 'time out' By Rob Pavey Augusta Chronicle (GA) March 18, 2010Savannah River National Laboratory took the unusual step of declaring a three-week "time out" last month for workers and facilities that handle radioactive materials - all because of an upswing in contamination incidents. "It wasn't so much the severity, but more the frequency," said deputy lab director Paul Deason, who halted work in some areas to reevaluate the monitoring rules under which individual labs within the U.S. Energy Department facility are governed. The decision, he said, was entirely voluntary and came on the heels of seven contamination episodes from September to February - a sum well above the average. ...
