County backs Luke in zoning flap

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an overlay 
zoning district protecting the high-noise and accident-potential zones 
of Luke Air Force Base, its Auxiliary Field 1 and Gila Bend Air
Force Auxiliary Field from residential encroachment.

The approval should finally put to rest a dispute lasting a couple of 
years between the state and Maricopa County over residentialconstruction 
near Luke and especially its Auxiliary Field 1.

The legal battle between the supervisors and Attorney General Terry 
Goddard was eventually joined by Gov. Jan Brewer who played the role of 
peacemaker and helped broker a deal between the parties that was signed 
at the Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa in February.
