VA alerts cancer patient to possible Lejeune water link HOPE HODGE Jacksonville Daily News (NC) May 12, 2010A former Camp Lejeune Marine received a letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs last month requesting that he send more evidence and information regarding his claim for kidney cancer related to contaminated base water. But John O'Rue said his claim request had never mentioned toxic water.O'Rue enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967 and spent more than a year in Camp Lejeune's bachelor enlisted housing at Hadnot Point before deploying to Vietnam for 13 months. He said he had believed his cancer was related to exposure to the chemical Agent Orange while overseas. Though he lived at Lejeune during a time when the water was heavily contaminated with the volatile organic compounds TCE and PCE, O'Rue, who now lives in Greenfield Township, Pa., said he had never heard about the contamination prior to that letter from the VA or been notified about his exposure. ...
