Cancer report challenged in $1.3B Quebec lawsuit BY KEVIN DOUGHERTY MONTREAL GAZETTE (QUE) AUGUST 2, 2010QUEBEC - In a blow to residents of a small Quebec community, provincial public health officials are disputing a study linking high cancer rates in the town to a toxic substance once used at the nearby Canadian Forces Base Valcartier. In 2007, residents of Shannon, Que., population about 4,000, won the right to seek damages, estimated as high as $1.3 billion, in a class-action suit against General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems Canada Inc. and the Department of National Defence. But a review by the Institut national de sants publique du Quebec of a 2009 study linking higher rates of cancer in Shannon, north of Quebec City, to trichloroethylene (TCE) in its drinking water says the evidence does not support that conclusion. ...
