Truman site needs contaminant cleanup By SEAN KINNEY Key West Keynoter (FL) August 4, 2010City officials are waiting for the results of environmental testing as development plans for the 33-acre Truman Waterfront parcel are crafted. The land at the end of Southard Street was given to the city in 2002 as part of the U.S. Navy base closure program. Since then, projects including a mega-yacht marina, affordable housing, amphitheater and even a water park have been pitched, although none have gained much traction or made any concrete progress. Based on nearly a decade of public input, residents of the Southernmost City have made clear their desire for the area to be preserved as passive park space -- 66 percent, based on city documents. But at least one piece of the land, some of which was used for heavy marine- and industrial-related activities, might not be suitable for recreation due to contaminants including lead and PCBs. ...
