City, schools eye armory re-use

Preschool for 600 is one possibility

WAUKEGAN -- The Marine Corps Reserve Center on McAree Road, which dates 
back to the Cold War and activated Marines during both Iraq wars, 
started slipping out to pasture four years ago when it was placed on a 
Base Closure and Realignment list by the Department of Defense.

As the building's service winds down, two suitors have two very 
different uses in mind for the property. The Waukegan Police Department 
is eyeing it for storage and training, The Waukegan Unit School District 
wants to see a preschool in the main buildings.

The City Council's Public Safety Committee approved a measure Monday 
recommending that at least portions of the site be used by the Police 
Department for such things as physical-fitness training and storage of 
evidence and large vehicles.
