Arlington Approved Plan For Post-BRAC Crystal City

The Arlington County Board passed a major long-term plan (PDF) for 
Crystal City at 12:03 a.m. Wednesday morning that will guide the way the 
neighborhood grows once the sweeping Base Realignment and Closure Act of 
2005 shifts 13,000 jobs out of the area, leaving 3.2 million vacant 
square feet of office space.

Crystal City bears the brunt of the total 4.2 million square feet of 
tenants Arlington County will lose to the Defense Department 
streamlining effort.

The approved 40-year revitalization plan will include tearing down or 
significantly renovating 35 to 40 buildings and increasing the density 
of the area (which today hosts about 25 million square feet) by 60 
percent. The plan will add up to 65 new buildings by 2050.
