Military offers cleanup plans By RUSTY DENNEN Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star (VA) November 27, 2010Final cleanup plans for three Superfund sites at Marine Corps Base Quantico will be discussed at a public meeting next month. The Navy, Environmental Protection Agency and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality will host the session on Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. in Room 147 of the Alfred M. Gray Research Center. The cleanup areas include site 96, a 1.6-acre tidal marsh north of Turner Field; site 99, a semi-circular inlet of about 190 acres along the Potomac River; and site 100, four parcels along Chopawamsic Creek. Placed on the Superfund National Priorities List in 1994, the 56,000-acre Marine Corps base, which straddles Stafford, Prince William and Fauquier counties, has been cleaning up pollution on dozens of sites. Contaminants include gun solvents, explosives, heavy metals and toxic chemicals caused by nearly a century of military training. ...
