Study warns about growth near Lackland AFB By Sig Christenson San Antonio Express-News (TX) December 1, 2010A new study says some areas north and south of Lackland AFB's runway are at risk of noise, light and safety problems from airplanes taking off and landing, and it warns that those issues only will worsen. One solution: creating a district to prevent unchecked development of homes and businesses off the north and south sides of the 11,500-foot runway. The idea is to stop construction that could interfere with flights over the base's "accident potential zone," where a plane is most likely to crash. "About every three years, somebody comes along wanting to build a hotel in the accident potential zone," said Mark Frye, who serves on the city's Military Transformation Task Force and has been involved in the study. "And in every single case, the military has had enough good communication with the zoning commission that those requests have been denied, but it's been on a case-by-case basis." ...
