Officials Invite Comments on Belvoir Expansion and Route One

Base changes could bring more gridlock to the area.

Should Route 1 through Fort Belvoir be "improved"?  What is "improvement"?

People can weigh in on these two fundamental questions and others as the 
Federal Highway Administration (FHA), the Department of the Army, the 
state, and Fairfax County decide on the future of Route 1 between 
Telegraph Road and Mount Vernon Highway.

U. S. Army studies predict that at least 1,000 new daily vehicle trips 
will be added to Route 1 north of Fort Belvoir when 3,400 new jobs move 
to the main post, a stretch of road that today has 37,000 to 56,000 
vehicles daily.  Most observers expect significant increases in traffic 
on the highway, a road that today is often gridlocked, as well as nearby 
roads because of the federal government's Base Realignment and Closure 
(BRAC) process.  BRAC could also create more contractor and hospital 
traffic; County officials also predict 1 million visitors each year to 
the proposed Army Museum in the area.
