Kaho‘olawe Uncovered V Kaho‘olawe today: last in a series about Maui County's most mysterious isle. Scott Broadbent Maui Weekly (HI) December 9, 2010In 1993, the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) was established by the State of Hawai'i to manage the island, its surrounding waters and its resources in trust for the general public and for a future Native Hawaiian entity. When federal funds were appropriated for the cleanup of unexploded ordnance (UXO), $44 million was authorized for KIRC programs and operations. With approximately 25 percent of the island un-cleared of UXO, additional UXO in the surrounding waters, no docking pier and approximately one-third of the island's surface reduced to hardpan, the task was formidable. KIRC took control of the former Navy facility at Honokanai‘a to utilize as its base camp. ...
