Homestead allows development near air base By Christina Veiga Miami Herald (FL) January 21, 2011In the Homestead city logo, green fields stretch into the horizon. A tractor chugs along in the distance, and a military plane streaks across the sky. Last week, City Council members had to balance the needs of the tractor, the fighter plane and another sometime symbol of the city - the bulldozer. The council approved three exceptions to safety rules, requested by the military, to limit development near the Homestead Air Reserve Base The council also agreed to support plans by the Homestead Miami Speedway to expand into wetlands beyond Miami-Dade County's Urban Development Boundary. The speedway is looking to expand into 298 acres outside of the urban development boundary. County planners recommend approving the deal, as long as Homestead gives up 120 acres in nearby land for conservation. Council members on Wednesday voted to express their support for the track's expansion - but not the conservation stipulation, because it could devalue city land. ...
