Editorial: Overdue for a Face Lift Editorial Mobile Press-Register (AL) February 23, 2011With or without Air Force tanker contract, Airport Authority should refurbish Brookley Aeroplex. BROOKLEY AEROPLEX, south of downtown Mobile, represents the best of the past and the best of the future. Brookley Army Air Field may be best recognized as the workhorse for the U.S. Army Air Corps that drew thousands of civilians from all over the region to help with the Allied effort before and during World War II. It then became an air base, which unfortunately succumbed to the largest base closure in history in the 1960s. Since that time, Brookley has hosted the space shuttle, staged a movie production and, most important, morphed into a modern hub for international aerospace. Now, of course, it is poised to become the assembly site for the Air Force’s aerial refueling tankers — that is, if the Department of Defense awards the potentially $40 billion contract to EADS, the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. ...
