Deadly Redstone Arsenal explosion caused by company's safety lapse,
investigation shows
By The Huntsville Times (AL) February 25, 2011HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- A Redstone Arsenal investigation into the May 2010 explosion that killed two contractors blames Amtec Corp. for using unsuitable equipment and not developing adequate safety procedures for its use. The investigation determined that Amtec "exercised poor safety discipline" in its work with a rocket fuel component. The explosion that killed Amtec contractors Jim Hawke and Jerry Grimes involved attempts to remove ammonium perchlorate, a oxidizer used in solid rocket propellant, from weapons. The explosion killed the two contractors and destroyed Building 7352 on Redstone's Test Area 10. ...
