Salinas-area racers benefit from Fort roads and trails, advocate for a place in its future Scott MacDonald Salinas Californian March 4, 2011Dozens of middle-aged men clad in Spandex and helmets stand above expensive bicycles on a remote paved road. It's a sunny Saturday morning in February, and Marc Franklin is calling out instructions for the race that's about to begin. "It's a nice course; it's a closed course," the USA Cycling official says. "But there could be people out there walking dogs, hiking, mountain biking. If people look oblivious, get out of their way. "This wasn't publicized like the Tour de France."The Tour it may not be, but the bicycle races held on the roads and trails of the former Fort Ord since 1995 bring hundreds of cycling enthusiasts to the area — an area the races' organizer describes as a "Shangri-La" for biking. ...
