Radford Army Ammunition Plant seeks more cleanup time from EPAThe Radford facility has asked the EPA to renew a permit allowing cleanup efforts to go on. By Laurence Hammack and Jeff Sturgeon Roanoke Times (VA) March 17, 2011The Radford Army Ammunition Plant is asking federal regulators for more time to clean up all the hazardous waste that was dumped years ago on the grounds of the military munitions complex. If the Environmental Protection Agency renews a permit for the cleanup, it would allow the plant to continue removing the debris of making explosives, some of which has remained in its earth and groundwater since World War II. Area residents will have a chance to learn more about the cleanup at a meeting scheduled for tonight at the New River Valley Competitiveness Center in Fairlawn. The operative law is the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, under which regulators strive to protect life and the environment from hazardous waste. Arsenal officials are operating on an expired Corrective Action Permit now. The EPA wants the arsenal to finish the job and expects to reissue the permit for another 10 years. ...
